Shoyeido Japanese Incense: A Simple Pleasure of Life Amidst a Hectic World for a Quite Modest Cost
Japanese Incense: A Simple Pleasure of Life Amidst a Hectic World for a Quite Modest CostAfter several decades, I recently decided to start burning incense again simply for the olfactory pleasure of it. I purchased several different fragrances of incense from Shoyeido, including Moss Garden (probably my favourite thus far), Cedarwood, Amber, Sandalwood (in the yellow box), and Jasmine. I like them all.Compared to Indian incense, the Shoyeido joss sticks are more subtle. I think they burn more cleanly, and the fragrances are not interfered by a core stick. They subtly scent the room in which I burn them, but they do not scent much more than the one small room. This is a plus if you live with someone who may not enjoy incense as much as you do. I understand Shoyeido also make a Frankincense incense and a Myrrh incense. I want to add both to my collection in the near future. These are very nice incenses for the price point, and I encourage everyone who has been thinking of trying one or more of these scents to jump in with both feet. If you have burnt and enjoyed Indian incense to any extent, I think you will love these joss sticks. I burn mine in a small koro filed with Shoyeido white ash. I also plan to try sand as a medium as well. These joss sticks do not become so hot that they would damage a porcelain koro. I like that fact. Also, both ash and sand allow the joss stick to burn up completely. Your sticks will continue to burn even after they have burnt down past the surface of the ash or the sand. I like this very much, too, as I feel there is no waste. I have been enjoying these joss sticks so much that I now find myself burning several sticks a day. They are a nice, quiet, pleasure conducive to relaxation, peace, and meditation as well as olfactory pleasure. Next, I plan to try burning incense resins on a charcoal for what some people call the ultimate way to enjoy pure incense.

Quality Manufacture, So-So Scent
I'm an incense fanatic, and I LOVE Nippon Kodo's Kayuragi line of incense, including the Kayuragi Jasmine . It's so true to the real thing that if you closed your eyes, you could easily imagine you were sitting in a florist's shop. It and all of the Kayuragi line are much more potent than Nippon Kodo's step down with the Morning Star line of incense, including this Morning Star Jasmine. That's okay though, an extra stick or two could easily make up for the decreased potency. What can't be compensated for is the overuse of sandalwood in this Morning Star blend. In honesty, I think the incense should be called "Sandalwood w/a Hint of Jasmine" rather than just "Jasmine", because that's actually what it is, and that's also true of some other Morning Star florals. A previous reviewer noted a similarity to the smell of incense used on occassion at a catholic mass, and that's what they were noticing - sandalwood (frankincense, myrrh and I think maybe some amber are what is actually used in catholic churches and doesn't smell much like sandalwood at all, but I knew what the reviewer was talking about right away).Don't get me wrong, I love sandalwood, including Morning Star Sandalwood ! I actually do what Nippon Kodo has done with this Morning Star blend myself, mixing sandalwood in with various florals from the Kayuragi line, but the ratio of sandalwood to floral in this Morning Star "jasmine" (and some other Morning Star florals) is far too high for my nose. It doesn't smell bad at all, but it isn't what I was shooting for when I bought "jasmine" incense. If you love the smell of sandalwood and would like to add a little variety to your enjoyment of it by adding small hints of floral scents, this Morning Star Jasmine and many of the other Morning Star florals will delight you to no end. If you're looking for a more purely floral scent that is true to the real thing, I believe you'd do a lot better with something from the Kayuragi line. You'll thank me for telling you about the indescribably beautiful scent you can get by blending a stick of Kayuragi Rose with a stick of Kayuragi Green Tea ! Other exquisite blends include Kayuragi White Peach with Kayuragi Sandalwood , Kayuragi Osmanthus with Kayuragi Narcissus , and Kayuragi Wisteria with Kayuragi Jasmine , and a stick of Kayuragi Aloeswood added to any of those blends makes them even better! Olfactory bliss! As for my rating, it's based on outstanding quality of manufacture, which I find to be true with all Nippon Kodo's various lines of incense, five stars for that, and my subjective experience of the scent, one star for that, because even though the scent isn't unpleasant, when I burn "Jasmine" incense, I want to smell jasmine, not sandalwood with a hint of jasmine. Average: three stars.I hope some of you will find my review helpful as you let your nose do the shopping at Amazon! Peace to all reading :-)

Memories of Sailor Moon and my years in middle school
So when I was little (1996-2003), I used to go to this Japanese bookstore to go get my Sailor moon mangas. They had an incense section next to their milky pens section (who remembers the hype with those?)I picked out this scent because of the color of the box and because I always associated the name jasmine with the color as well (princess jasmine outfit color from Aladdin)Anyways, it’s been my favorite scent since the day I bought it and it always gives me such a good feeling in my soul every time I light it.It’s very soft, almost sweet smell but not strong to where you get an obnoxious headache from it. It’s very calming and gives a good vibe to the room you light it in.It’s great for yoga, meditation, reading and even when having people over. It’s not overbearing and gives a good impression to your clean home.I recommend to everyone looking for a gentle, clean and peaceful scent.-Esperanza@getzaazaafit
